Policeman helps German Shepherd find new home after owner arrested

  • A dog whose owner was arrested has found a new loving home thanks to a police officer

A police officer has helped a German Shepherd Dog find a new home after the dog's owner was arrested. Seattle police officer Eric Michl was on DUI patrol when he pulled aside a driver on suspicion of drunk driving.

Michl arrested the man for DUI and it would have been a routine case if not for an outstanding arrest warrant on the man and the German Shepherd Dog accompanying him.

Officer Michl learned the man was wanted on a felony burglary warrant in California. After her owner was arrested, the German Shepherd Dog named Lynna rode with Michl in the back of his police car to be dropped off at the Seattle Animal Shelter.

"I just felt really bad that this dog and her owner would have to be separated," Michl told the Seattle PI. "Even though he’s in trouble with the law, I felt really bad for him."

Officer Michl checked into the situation to see what could be done and spoke with the man's attorney. Unfortunately, Lynna's owner did not have someone to look after the dog. On Tuesday, Michl wrote an appeal on his personal Facebook page:

I am seeking a new home for a young female German Shepard. I arrested her owner last week for DUI and later discovered he was wanted in California for Burglary. He is currently awaiting extradition back to California and is unable to find a home for his dog Lynna who is at Seattle Animal Control. I learned today she is available for adoption and have been working with his attorney to find her a new home.

She has been deemed adoptable by Animal Control which is good news! The separation from her owner obviously was not Lynna's fault and she deserves a chance to live a full and happy life.

Within hours, Michl heard back from several people willing to foster or take the dog. A doctor also expressed interest and by Wednesday afternoon, it looks like her home might be the best fit. Michl said he is happy that the man knows Lynna is going to a good home.

With just a little effort and care it is possible to find a better solutions than euthanasia. I'll bet a few years down the road that the family who adopted the dog will say they can't imagine a life without there dog. A great big well done to Officer Eric Michl for turning a sad situation into one with hope.
How awesome! I know we wish our police force would show more common sense and caring and this just shows arresting someone does not mean you close your eyes to the entire situation. I know that man really appreciates what you did for him and his dog.
That is kind and loving of you, officer Michl, for thinking of Lynna's well-being. A job well-done! Personally, I don't think Lynna's owner should relinquish his ownership for good. Lynna deserves a more stable and loving home life. Until he turns his life around he has no business owning an animal.
