A loyal dog who stayed by her deceased owner's side for several weeks before she was found, got a happy ending thanks to the man's sister and a group of volunteers.
It took weeks for the dog named Bunny Sue to arrive at the home of her new owner, Sara Perron, but her journey was rewarding to everyone involved.
Saved from a shelter in Louisiana by Sara's brother 5 years ago, Bunny Sue was his best friend. Sadly, a few weeks ago Sara learned her brother had passed away and that Bunny Sue had been found by his side. The dog had been taken to the very same pound she had been rescued from but was just days away from being put down.
Sara told ABC Columbia, "Two weeks ago I got a phone call and I found out that my brother had been found dead in his home and he had been there a couple weeks." To her shock and surprise, she learned that Bunny Sue was still alive. But she faced a challenge in rescuing the dog because she lived 5 states away and couldn't go pick her up herself.
With the help of a friend, Sara learned about the volunteer rescue transport organization called Kindred Hearts Transport Connection. With over 2800 members across the United States, the group makes homecomings and rescues like Bunny Sue's possible.
Bunny Sue was saved from the shelter and made 13 new friends as she travelled with volunteers across the country to her new home in Florence, South Carolina.
Bunny Sue arrived safely and has been welcomed by Sara and her other dogs. Sara said, "Even though I couldn't do anything for my brother the thing that I'd like to do in his honor is to make sure that his loyal dog, who was with him in the end, could find another forever home."
