Lily the Beagle came into Janey Siegrist's life unexpectedly. Still grieving from the recent loss of her first dog, Janey admits the malnourished puppy opened her heart...
"This is Lily."
"When I lost my first dog Tempi (RIP 8/8/07), I closed my heart to allowing another dog into my life. She had given me 10 great years, and her passing left me empty and alone inside. Other people's dogs seemed enough to soothe my heart.
Just a year after we lost Tempi, as I was getting ready to have cervical spinal surgery, my daughter brought a friend home. My daughter had been begging for another dog, and I refused all.
Then one day in November of 2007, a friend of hers came to us with a 6-week-old-malnourished beagle puppy.
Her story starts as a product of a local puppy mill. The litter she was born into also saw congenital defects in at least one sibling. This little slip of a spitfire, weighed no more than 2 lbs, was all big head, ribs, hips, and 'Ethiopian' belly. She had been rescued by friends on the way to the vet to be euthanized.
Maybe she was not perfect, maybe she would not have commanded full retail price, because she did not fit breed standard. But there was nothing wrong with this dog. It was love at first sight. Wary of what I was getting myself into, I agreed to my daughter that she could be ours.
Lily will be 5 in October. As beagles have their own unique set of issues growing up, it has not always been easy having the breed, but OMG, how I love her. She taught me that there is life after Tempi...that it is OK to open your heart to all dogs. They need us as much as we need them, and most of all, that dog love, is the best love a person can experience. Just once in a lifetime, every soul would be better off for the love of a dog."
