Vicious, a 12-year-old Border Collie/Labrador cross came to the rescue of her owner and two puppies when a wild animal entered their home in Trail, British Columbia.

On a warm summer evening last August, Angie Prime was relaxing in her living room with Vicious, and her two puppies. Like she had done in the past, Angie had her lights turned off so as not to attract insects, and left the sliding door open to the backyard so her pets could go in and out.

Suddenly, Angie sensed another presence in the room. She turned and found herself face-to-face with a cougar. Realizing she had nowhere to go, Angie put her arms up to shield her face and screamed as the cougar pounced on her. From across the room, Vicious sprang into action, launching herself at the cougar. The cat disengaged and headed towards the open door.

Vicious followed protectively, chasing the cougar out towards the green belt at the back of the property. Not long after, Vicious came back fortunately unharmed. Conservation officers arrived at the scene and they agreed that Angie was extremely lucky to be alive. If it wasn't for Vicious' quick action and dedication, Angie would have met a very different fate.

Vicious was inducted into the Purinal Animal Hall of Fame on Monday, for her courage and devotion.

Glad this dog saved her human! What a brave dog she is. I am sorry to hear stories of emaciated cougars attacking dogs and humans. Will they soon become extinct because it seems they have no food in hteir habitat?
What a beautiful looking dog. This was an extremely dangerous situation. Dogs will give their lives for you without hesitation. They will defend their pack to the death. I think that there is no question that the cougar was shocked by the unexpected resistance and cowed because of his emaciated condition. Congratulations on receiving your award Vicious, you deserve it. Well done.
That is a flat-coated retriever not a border collie mix. They said their friends dog from when she was a Puppy was the mix. Flat-coats are very protective and loving dogs. Great story though!
What an amazing dog
