Updated: Puppy survives Moore tornado reunited with family; how to help others affected by the storm

"Scared, but this little pup survived" Oklahoma County Sheriff shared this picture of a dog on Twitter on Monday, just hours after a deadly tornado hit Moore, Oklahoma. The Oklahoma County Sheriff then tweeted the story behind the picture, "The dog was guarding it's deceased owner. Taken to shelter; deputy plans on adopting." A few hours after the Sheriff's Office posted the same photo to Facebook, it was discovered that the dog's owner is actually...

Dogs linked to giving people healthy hearts

The majority of dog lovers will say that owning a dog is good for your heart. Today, the American Heart Association has made it official and released a statement that said that owning a dog may protect you from heart disease. "Pet ownership, particularly dog ownership, is probably associated with a decreased risk of heart disease," wrote Dr. Glenn N. Levine, a professor of medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in a press release. Dr....

Heiry Question: Woman who died of cancer had guide dog euthanized and buried with her

An Indiana woman who died after a long battle with cancer on March 8 requested that her dog accompany her to the grave. Sheila Stadler, 68, made the unusual decision to have her healthy 5-year-old guide dog, Toffee, euthanized and buried with her. According to WTHI News 10, the decision has proven controversial, although it is legal. Cat walks a dog on a lease: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=RnrCki4Cmzw
I missed it because I thought it would be under environmental dangers.
Thanks Darrin, we wrote an article on Blastomycosis last April: Blastomycosis in Dogs: Symptoms, Treatment and Prevention. This is one of our most searched for health articles (it's listed under Infectious Diseases).
Perhaps an article about Blastomycosis should be added to the environmental dangers section of this site. I have read now on a few occasions people either talking about their dog being afflicted with this or alerting others to its presence. I did a little looking around and learned that there are some places that are known hot spots, like the Kenora area of northwestern Ontario Canada. Perhaps a list of some of these known hot spots would be helpful to some people on this site.
I know dogs see colors a little differently than humans. Dogs see blue and yellow the best. With humans pink seems to have a calming effect. I was wondering if there have been any studies to see if there is a color that has a calming effect on dogs? I started wondering about this after reading your article- ASPCA opens dedicated treatment center for abused and traumatized dogs. Is there a standardized color used in shelter facilities?
