The Australian Shepherd, despite its name is not Australian in origins at all, but rather a breed likely originated in the Pyrenees Mountains somewhere between Spain and France and was further developed in the United States. The dog was bred for work as a herding dog, retriever and ranch dog. They need lots of activity and a sense of purpose and work to be truly content.
The Australian Shepherd has a remarkable coat of blue merle, red merle, or red and black all colors. They may come with or without white markings and/or tan (copper) points.
Size: 35 - 70 pounds; 18 - 23 inches tall
Life Expectancy: 12 - 15 years
Energy: Australian Shepherds are high energy dogs and need plenty of exercise and activities.
Obedience: They are easy to train and smart dogs. The Australian Shepherd excels at herding, agility training, competitive obedience and retrieving.
Temperament: Aussies have strong herding instincts that may weaken its ability to function as a family dog. However if properly socialized they are sweet and affectionate dogs.
Grooming: Requires moderate grooming.
Shedding: Aussies are seasonal shedders.
